Raphael Soyer
Raphael Soyer painted numerous portraits and scenes of Depression-era reality, streetscapes and pedestrians, shoppers and workers. His empathy for working class struggles resulted in paintings that looked at the transient with respect and introspection. He was relentless advocate for realism, never persuaded by what came into fashion. Abram Lerner, a past director of the Hirschhorn Museum, once called him the “dean of American realist painters”.
Died 1987 in New York City, NY
